STUBBORNNESS
1 SAM 15: 22 -23
22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great
delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and
stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee
from being king.
stubbornness
to set the mind, to be dull, unresponsive
Webster:
refusing to yield, obey, or comply
iniquity empty, worthless, vain,
especially as related to false gods -
idols
idolatry HEB word used exclusively to identify
a personal (family) idol
STUBBORNNESS IS THE IDOLATRY OF SELF Idolatry is SIN !
TWO MANIFESTATIONS
1) RESISTING GOD
2) EMPHASIZING SELF
EXAMPLES:
EX 32: 7 - 10
7 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee
down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have
corrupted themselves:
8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way
which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped
it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which
have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
9 And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen
this people, and, behold, it is a
stiff-necked people:
10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may
wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a
great nation.
stiff-necked impudent, obstinate, stubborn
PROBLEM:
Hebrews didn't
"see" God working or Moses acting as they
expected so they took matters into their
own hands. God got angry.
1 SAM 8: 1 - 3
1 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old,
that he made his sons judges over
Israel.
2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and
the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.
3 And his
sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes,
and perverted judgment.
Wickedness was result of Samuel choosing his own sons to
succeed him as judge in Israel (Samuel's idea not God's anointed)
1 SAM 8: 4 - 7, 19
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered
themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and
thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the
nations.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they
said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the
voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected Me, that I
should not reign over them.
19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the
voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;
The people refused to obey and demanded to have their own (NOT God's) way.
2 CHRON 30: 7 - 1O
7 And be not ye like your fathers, and like
your brethren, which trespassed against the LORD God of their fathers, who
therefore gave them up to desolation, as ye see.
8 Now be
ye not stiff-necked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves unto the LORD,
and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath sanctified for ever: and serve the
LORD your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you.
9 For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your
brethren and your children shall find compassion before them that lead them
captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is
gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return
unto him.
10 So the posts passed from city to city through
the country of Ephraim and Manasseh even unto Zebulun: but they laughed them to
scorn, and mocked them.
yield lit: to give the hand, fig to pledge
fidelity and submission to God
RESULT:
Some laughed to
scorn and mocked, some humbled themselves and came;
to these God gave
them one heart (unity, accord)
OBSERVATION:
stubbornness is directly opposed to, and a prevention of, unity!
JER 32: 33 - 34
33 And they
have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them,
rising up early and teaching them, yet they
have not hearkened to receive instruction.
34 But they set their abominations in the house,
which is called by my name, to defile it.
they have turned unto me the
back and not the face fig. disdain and disregard for the Word
and admonition of the LORD; a turning toward self, doing what they wanted
they have not hearkened to
receive instruction even though the Lord himself
gave them teaching faithfully
RESULT: God sent judgment;
Babylon, sword, siege famine, and pestilence sickness
(HOWEVER, God also
promised restoration to the remnant who repented)
ZEC 7: 8 - 12
8 And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah,
saying,
9 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying,
Execute true judgment, and show mercy and compassion every man to his brother:
10 And oppress not the widow, nor the
fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil
against his brother in your heart.
11 But they
refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears,
that they should not hear.
12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant
stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts
hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath
from the LORD of hosts.
they refused to hearken showed that they were unwilling
pulled away the shoulder to withdraw from common purpose, out of
agreement,
would not walk with God)
stopped their ears word
often used in HEB as "harden the
heart")
ACTS
7: 51 (Stephen's proclamation)
Ye stiff-necked

OF THE IDOLATRY OF SELF
SEEKING REPUTATION
MATT 6:2, 5, 16
2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not
sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the
streets, that they may have glory of men.
Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as
the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the
corners of the streets, that they may be
seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the
hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast.
Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
glory of men, seen of men, appear to
men self-exaltation
PHIL 2: 5-7
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in
Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not
robbery to be equal with God:
7 But
made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and
was made in the likeness of men:
SEEKING VISIBILITY
LUKE 20: 46
46 Beware
of the scribes, which desire to walk in
long robes, and love greetings
in the markets, and the highest seats
in the synagogues, and the chief rooms
at feasts;
beware
fig. to hold the mind towards,
i.e. pay attention to, be cautious about,
apply oneself to, adhere to: not only are we to not do what they do
but we are also to put distance between us
and them!
LUKE 14: 7 - 11
7 And he put forth a parable to those which
were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto
them,
8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding,
sit not down in the highest room;
lest a more honorable man than thou be bidden of him;
9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to
thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room;
that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher:
then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with
thee.
11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be
abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Jesus taught us to willingly (and joyfully) choose the lower (more
obscure) place
SEEKING POWER OVER OTHERS
MARK 10: 35 - 37
35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come
unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we
shall desire.
36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should
do for you?
37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on
thy left hand, in thy glory.
they sought exalted places and power
for themselves
LUKE 22: 24 - 27
24 And
there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the
greatest.
25 And he said unto them, The kings of the
Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon
them are called benefactors.
26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is
greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that
doth serve.
27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at
meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
Jesus set the example that, in the
Kingdom of God, the greatest leader shows
himself to be the best servant.
1 COR 3: 1 - 3
1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as
unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat:
for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
3 For ye
are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and
divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
Paul was not writing this to the
unbeliever, he was writing to the church
at Corinth. These people were acting out of their lower
nature, not being
led and influenced by the Spirit of God
, but by self. The proof was strife.
2 COR

JOHN 12: 42 - 43
42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many
believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest
they should be put out of the synagogue:
43 For
they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

esteemed)
JAMES 4: 4
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not
that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will
be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
friend fond,
dear, associate as in the sense of a brother to
enemy hostile, adversary, a word often used
of Satan's work
ROM 8: 6 - 8
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be
spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against
God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot
please God.
carnal mind sense
and reason apart from the Holy Spirit (Amplified Bible)
enmity hostile,

Here again the carnal nature, the self-centered flesh is seen as
the problem
SEEKING PREEMINENCE
MARK 9: 33-35
33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the
house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?
34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among
themselves, who should be the greatest.
35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and
saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all,
and servant of all.
disputed arguing,
strife, contention, disunity, flesh
3 JOHN 9 - 10
9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among
them, receiveth us not.
10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his
deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content
therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them
that would, and casteth them out of the church.
loveth to
be fond of being first, i.e. ambitious of distinction:
Diotrephes loved the preeminence to the degree that he rejected
valid ministries and expelled those who disagreed
